After You Disclose
After UA innovators disclose an innovation, OTT engages in actions aimed at executing an IP license with a company that will diligently develop the innovation for sale to the public or other end-users.
Upon receipt of an IP disclosure:
- OTT reviews the disclosure for completeness, and logs it in under a unique project number
- A licensing associate takes the case and consults the innovators to gain additional insight into the innovation and to identify potential licensees
- The licensing associate conducts an In-depth evaluation of rights consolidation, external obligations to sponsors or existing licensees, breadth and strength of available intellectual property protection, possible positioning within an industry sector, and degree of commercial interest by specific companies
- In favorable situations, OTT engages outside patent counsel to apply for patent protection or federally register a copyright
- OTT secures assignment (transfer of ownership) of rights from UA individual innovators to ABOR
- The licensing associate brings the innovation to the attention of potential licensees, and discusses license terms and availability with those showing interest
- If a licensee is identified the licensing associate negotiates a license under which the licensee company, which might be a startup or a more mature company, takes on the obligation to develop the innovation and bring it to market, with a portion of the resulting revenue returned to the University
- OTT distributes revenues from the license the innovators and academic units as described by UA's IP Policy
- Periodically during the term of the license,, the licensing associate tracks license performance and compliance
